Owlcrate-A-Thon Roundup

I’ll admit I have the hardest time staying up to date with current reads. I will buy books or receive books from people and sometimes it takes me months to actually get to them.

When Owlcrate - the awesome people who run the YA subscription box I subscribe to - announced their two week read-a-thon, I figured it was time to jump into some of the books that have long been sitting on my shelves just itching to be read.

Best Bets:

Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows - four out of five stars - This one follows a young girl who gets sent to prison for defying the leadership of her island. Mystery, intrigue, and dragons. The world building was solid and I’m excited to read the sequel.

Don’t Bother:

Ironically none merit this category…. this time… But in the category of “if you’re desperate and need something to read” might I recommend Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills? Not great, not terrible. Totally predictable, slightly teen angsty but not the worst.

Give it a chance:

Pride by Ibi Zoboi - it’s a retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I’ll admit, I mostly hate anything that is a retelling of Jane Austen. Somehow, this one managed to win me over. Set in a neighborhood in Brooklyn, it manages to capture of the heart of Jane Austen’s original all the while making it culturally relevant without just rehashing the same old story.
